Housing & Land Management
PMAY-G Completion in Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh has achieved a remarkable milestone by completing 100% of its housing targets under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G), showcasing the state's unwavering dedication to rural development and social welfare. This achievement underscores the proactive efforts of the state government in addressing housing inadequacies across remote and geographically challenging terrains.

Launched by the Government of India in 2016, PMAY-G aims to provide "Housing for All" by constructing pucca houses with basic amenities such as electricity, LPG connection, water supply, and sanitation for the rural poor, especially those living in kutcha or semi-permanent homes. Arunachal Pradesh’s 100% completion rate under this scheme is particularly commendable, considering the logistical and infrastructural hurdles often faced in the northeastern region, such as difficult terrain, scattered settlements, and limited connectivity.

Key factors that contributed to this success include:

  • Efficient Planning and Execution: District-level micro-planning, real-time monitoring using the AwaasSoft platform, and close supervision by the state rural development departments ensured timely implementation.

  • Community Participation: Beneficiary involvement in house construction not only empowered rural families but also ensured that the homes suited local climatic and cultural requirements.

  • Use of Technology: Adoption of geotagging for progress tracking, direct benefit transfers (DBT) for transparency in fund allocation, and mobile-based inspections helped maintain accountability and speed.

  • Capacity Building: Training and orientation programs for local functionaries and panchayats improved coordination and project execution.

  • Integration with Other Schemes: Homes were often provided with complementary facilities under schemes like Saubhagya (electricity), Ujjwala (LPG), and Swachh Bharat Mission (toilets), promoting holistic development.

The completion of PMAY-G houses has had a profound impact on rural livelihoods in Arunachal Pradesh. It has improved safety, health, dignity, and overall quality of life for thousands of households, particularly among marginalized groups such as Scheduled Tribes and economically weaker sections. The effort aligns closely with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).

Arunachal Pradesh’s success story serves as a model for other states striving to fulfill their rural housing objectives and highlights the transformative potential of focused governance, community engagement, and digital innovation.
