Churachandpur NGO Proposes Shelter for 500 Displaced Kuki-Zo Families

In response to the ongoing displacement crisis in Manipur, a local NGO in Churachandpur has submitted a proposal to construct temporary housing units for over 500 displaced families belonging to the Kuki-Zo community. The initiative comes as thousands remain without stable shelter following the ethnic unrest that erupted in 2023.

Project Overview:

• The proposed housing plan includes basic prefabricated shelters, sanitation facilities, and access to clean water, electricity, and community kitchens.

• The NGO, working in coordination with local civic bodies and humanitarian aid groups, has identified unused government land on the outskirts of Churachandpur as a potential site for construction.

Objective and Impact:

The initiative aims to restore a sense of security and dignity to displaced families while longer-term rehabilitation plans are underway. Priority will be given to vulnerable groups, including women-headed households, the elderly, and children.

According to NGO representatives, the estimated project cost is ₹4 crore, with funding expected from a mix of crowdfunding, private donations, and NGO partnerships. The plan has been submitted to state authorities and RERA Manipur for approval and oversight, ensuring compliance with safety and humanitarian standards.

Community Response:

The proposal has been well-received by local community leaders and volunteers. "These families have been living in makeshift camps or with relatives for nearly a year. This project gives hope for a more stable and humane living environment,” said a local church leader.

If approved, construction is expected to begin by late Q2 2025, with completion slated for early 2026.
