Kolkata Enforces IGBC Green Norms in New Town

In a significant move toward sustainable urban development, Kolkata has made it mandatory for all new residential and commercial projects in New Town to obtain IGBC (Indian Green Building Council) certification. This regulation aims to promote eco-friendly construction practices, reduce carbon emissions, and ensure efficient resource use in upcoming developments.
The initiative is expected to reshape the city’s real estate landscape by encouraging builders to adopt energy-efficient technologies, rainwater harvesting, solar panels, and better waste management systems. The mandate aligns with national sustainability goals and reflects Kolkata’s proactive stance on climate resilience.
New Town, already recognized as a smart and planned township, is set to become a hub for green real estate, attracting both environmentally conscious homebuyers and corporate tenants. Developers have welcomed the move, acknowledging that green-certified buildings can command better rentals and long-term savings on energy costs.
This policy not only strengthens buyer trust but also places Kolkata among leading Indian cities advocating for sustainable growth in the construction sector.
