Affordable Housing in Howrah Rises 10%, Backed by State Push

Howrah, West Bengal – April 2025:
Howrah is witnessing a notable boost in its affordable housing segment, as the West Bengal Housing Board launches new EWS (Economically Weaker Section) units, aimed at supporting low-income homebuyers.

These new residential projects have led to a 10% increase in overall housing supply, with unit prices ranging from ₹20 to ₹35 lakh. The initiative primarily targets daily-wage workers, small traders, and first-time buyers who are currently underserved in the formal housing market.

Projects are being strategically launched in well-connected localities like Shibpur, Belur, and Kona, ensuring accessibility to public transport, schools, and workplaces. With rising demand for compact, well-located homes, this move is expected to bridge the urban housing gap in one of Kolkata’s busiest satellite cities.

The Housing Board is also leveraging subsidies under PMAY (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana) and easing approval norms to reduce project timelines. This is part of a broader strategy to make housing more inclusive across urban and peri-urban West Bengal.

According to local developers, the EWS sector in Howrah is showing increasing interest from salaried individuals, government clerks, and small business owners, particularly with EMI-friendly units under ₹10,000 per month.

With Howrah’s integration into Kolkata’s metro grid and growing employment zones, affordable housing will likely remain a key driver of the region’s real estate expansion in 2025.
