Howrah Launches Blockchain Land Registry

West Bengal Expands Digital Land Registry to Howrah
In a move to strengthen transparency and property rights, the West Bengal government has extended its blockchain-based digital land registry system to Howrah. This initiative is set to streamline residential and commercial property transactions while curbing land-related disputes and fraud.
By integrating blockchain technology, the land title records become tamper-proof and easily verifiable, offering a secure digital ledger for buyers, sellers, and government authorities. The rollout in Howrah follows successful implementation in cities like Siliguri and Kolkata, indicating a state-wide push towards digital governance in real estate.
Officials from the West Bengal Land and Land Reforms Department stated that over 5,000 land records in Howrah have already been digitized, with public access enabled via a secure online portal. The platform allows instant verification of ownership, encumbrance checks, and title clarity — eliminating reliance on physical documentation.
Real estate stakeholders in Howrah, including developers and legal advisors, have welcomed the move, noting that investor confidence and transaction speed are expected to rise, especially in upcoming zones like Liluah, Shibpur, and Andul.
