Noida Tightens Rules for Green Buildings

Noida’s Green Building Norms Strengthened, LEED Certification Now Mandatory for New Projects
In a significant move towards environmental sustainability, the Noida Authority has tightened its green building regulations, mandating that all new residential and commercial projects must now comply with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification standards.
This step is aimed at promoting eco-friendly construction practices, improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and ensuring responsible use of resources. The new mandate applies to both high-rise apartments and commercial complexes being planned or approved in the city.
Developers are now required to submit sustainability plans including rainwater harvesting systems, energy-efficient lighting, solar power integration, low-VOC materials, and proper waste management systems as part of the project clearance process.
LEED certification is globally recognized and assesses buildings on factors like sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. Projects that meet these criteria not only benefit the environment but also offer cost savings to residents and occupants in the long run.
Real estate experts believe that while this may initially increase project costs by 3–5%, the long-term gains in operational efficiency, healthier living conditions, and global investor interest will outweigh the expense.
Noida’s proactive policy positions it as a leader in green urban development in North India, and aligns with India's larger goals of net-zero carbon emissions and climate-resilient cities.
